Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Preventing frozen pipes is important during the colder months to avoid damage to your plumbing system. Here are some steps to help prevent frozen pipes:

  1. Insulate pipes: Insulate any exposed pipes in unheated areas, such as the attic, basement, or garage. This can be done using pipe sleeves, heat tape, or similar products.
  2. Seal leaks: Make sure to seal any air leaks around pipes that could allow cold air to enter and cause freezing.
  3. Keep your home warm: Keep your home at a consistent temperature, even when you’re away. If you’re leaving for an extended period of time, consider keeping your heat on to prevent freezing. Note: Your insurance policy may require you to keep a certain temperature in your home. Failure to do so may result in a frozen pipe claim being denied.
  4. Open cabinet doors: Open the cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
  5. Let faucets drip: Let a small trickle of water run from faucets to keep water flowing and prevent freezing.
  6. Drain outdoor pipes: Disconnect and drain any outdoor hoses, and close any outdoor valves to prevent water from accumulating and freezing.

By taking these steps, you can help prevent frozen pipes and avoid potential damage to your plumbing system.
